The following is a list of stages that basketball teams go through when they are learning. This can also apply to life and they must be grounded in a foundation of fundamentals.
Basketball- passing, dribbling, shooting, screening, sliding, etc.
Life- reading, writing, speaking, socialization, etc.
Stage 1- See and acquire. Seeing what you need to do is valuable so you have a frame of reference +/-.
Stage 2- Slow down and repeat. (Mechanical Stage) This is where you are pumping repetition to make it habitual. You go through the motions so that when the pressure or expectation is turned up you can automatically revert back to your natural instincts that have been sharpened.
Stage 3- The Speed Phase. Once the motions are down, you start to go faster, but you start to miss the true learning/scoring opportunities that are available. This is sometime referred to as "running the play to run the play"... read the situation and move accordingly. (Life skill as well!)
Stage 4- Read and React. Right move, right time, where you read the situation and make a postive choice that will produce results... done at game speed!
Confidence = Successful Repetition
Stage 5- Game experience. This is when you do it right on your own with no direction and its for real with consequences.
