After several great learning opportunities to hear some great minds speak, this blog has created a forum to share my insights as I see them... even if no one is reading them right now :0)... but also a way for me to log what I am thinking and have a digital place to go back and see it. The following is a combination of things that will allow me to work toward #upaid and maybe spark thought among others. I call them the 3 T's of Success. I am sure there are more variables than just these three, but it is hard to argue that in any phase of life these three are not important.
1. Time- As coach Jeff Meyer said... "Time is like money." You have three basic options with which to spend your most valuable resource of time:
"Waste"- You can "waste" your time. This is typically done by putting time into something that does not link to your non-negotiables, or life's priorities. Often when you are done wasting time you regret what you did because you feel like you put your resources in and it gave you nothing back in return.
"Spend"- You "spend" time often doing things that may relate to your life's priorities but you do it in a disorganized way that is inefficient, unclear, or half-speed. It is in this stage that people think that they are doing a good job of really attacking their life's priorities and in actuality, while it is better than wasting time, it still yields little return. You put your resource in, but do too inadequate processes or planning your outcomes are still minimal.
"Invest"- You "invest" time with the idea that the returns for your time will produce major results and positive outcomes. It may be for your betterment or the betterment of others, but you see major strides. This is where we see the positives of goal-setting, monitoring, and feedback. In life are you investing your time in your life's priorities. E.g. My kids, I can waste my time by doing meaningless stuff and miss their birthday, or I can spend time with them and buy them cupcakes to celebrate, or I can invest my time and bake cupcakes with them and talk about their day and why we celebrate with cupcakes and why their birthday is so special.
My Take Away: Life is too short to worry about and waste time on things that I can not effect or things that do not affect me. Time is too valuable to just go through the motions spending time on all different areas when the things that are right in front of you are the most important. Faith and family are just right to invest your time in, to leave your legacy, and to inspire as much positive change as you can!!
2. Tools- In basketball the most effective players are what some coaches call "5 Tool" players. In life, the most effective people are people that are "5 Tool" players as well.
Basketball:
1. dribble- does the dirty work to get the group going...
2. passer- sets people up for immediate success...
3. shooter- finishes the deal...
4. rebound- can take mistakes and make them seem better/or is the closer after a great team effort
5. defend- this person can be the best leader and can be accountable for the group
Life:
1. Unity- sees the value in group effort
2. Passion- pursues goals with commitment and pride
3. Appreciation- understands that it takes more than one to get it done... values their opportunities
4. Integrity- does it right because its right and is accountable
5. Diligence- is willing to outwork anyone to achieve their goals
Do you see any similarities because I do. At the tender age of 32 my life has clarity and I am striving everyday to life everyday according to my non-negotiables. Say what you believe and believe what you say.
3. Talent- The timeless question of do I play my best five players or my five best players?
There is a difference between "knowing" what to do and "doing". Talent is the ability to work together to close that gap between knowing that you have to rebound, knowing when to rebound, knowing how to rebound, and then actually rebounding. The most talented guys are the ones that get the job done... period.
This blog is dedicated to my children so that I can have a published account of motivational, inspirational, and educational wisdom. I am by no means the authority, but I try to have conviction in order to live a larger purpose.

Fast Five for Friday (Late Edition)
1. We are 8 days away from starting our season and the anticipation and excitement in me is starting to build. I don't think my guys truly understand how good they can be. It is going to take a lot to bring them together but we have tools.
2. I saw Dr. Carron, a sports psychologist, at Medaille College on Wednesday night. He discussed 4 areas that can help lead to building strong teams. Great insight, "If you take care of the process, the end result will be fine." (More to come in a future post.)
3. I had a staff development yesterday at school. TR-Harvey Silver was there giving us the run down of the "Thoughtful Classroom". He is an intelligent man, gifted presenter, and passionate about his work. The take away, "Make it about learning and how you learn (the process) and the rest will take care of itself."
4. Take away from points 3 and 4... It does not matter what your endeavor you have to work on your craft, perfect your process, and work towards achieving goals. Reevaluate those goals and repeat. I truly believe your legacy is being built every day, piece by piece, make everyday count while serving others.
5. Have high expectations, show them how, and show them why its relevant. If something is meaningful to you share it, share your passion, and people will buy in.
Next fast five for Friday... maybe just maybe the preseason edition. Thanks for reading and allowing me to catalog my thoughts and share. Feel free to share back!

Stages of Learning (Basketball or anything)
The following is a list of stages that basketball teams go through when they are learning. This can also apply to life and they must be grounded in a foundation of fundamentals.
Basketball- passing, dribbling, shooting, screening, sliding, etc.
Life- reading, writing, speaking, socialization, etc.
Stage 1- See and acquire. Seeing what you need to do is valuable so you have a frame of reference +/-.
Stage 2- Slow down and repeat. (Mechanical Stage) This is where you are pumping repetition to make it habitual. You go through the motions so that when the pressure or expectation is turned up you can automatically revert back to your natural instincts that have been sharpened.
Stage 3- The Speed Phase. Once the motions are down, you start to go faster, but you start to miss the true learning/scoring opportunities that are available. This is sometime referred to as "running the play to run the play"... read the situation and move accordingly. (Life skill as well!)
Stage 4- Read and React. Right move, right time, where you read the situation and make a postive choice that will produce results... done at game speed!
Confidence = Successful Repetition
Stage 5- Game experience. This is when you do it right on your own with no direction and its for real with consequences.

Fast Five for Friday 10/18/12 (Thursday Edition)
1. It is amaizing what positives can happen when you have parents that care about their kids and hold them accountable, yet provide endless opportunities.
2. Year 11 of teaching middle school and one thing seems to be true, this age sees varying degrees of personal development. We have had, have, and will probably always have kids that are mature/immature for their age. It is so developmental, yet so environmental at the same time. Let's challenge them and bring them along... I think they will surprice all of us.
3. It is weird when you realize you aren't the young guy anymore... when you look around and see the people you are dealing with are looking at you you like you are old and don't know how young kids act. We do and we are experienced enough to want to share it with you so you can eliminate mistakes we made.
4. A passion is something that you find yourself thinking about, even if you are not supposed to be thinking about it. (Faith, Family, Basketball)
5. I love what I do. I can not imagine being stuck in a factory, or in a cubicle, or not interacting with people. Helping them find their way helps me find my way.
Bonus: Despite your best efforts to serve, someone will always find fault. If you are well intentioned don't stop, just grind. You are appreciated.
"Those with the most will go last, those with the least will go first." -serve others and make someone smile everyday!

#UPAID?
I don't think that this concept is new. The idea of putting together a plan that you work towards in your life. People have been creating these plans for decades and longer. Yet, for all of the people I come into contact with they ask me what #upaid? stands for. It is merely a question, have upaid the price to be successful. I believe that there are certain things that if you attempt to achieve them or consult with them when you make decisions then you are going to do all right in this life.
Without doubt my priorities are simple:
1) Faith
2) Family
3) Friends... and I only list these because the Lord oversees it all. Family, nuclear or extended, is #1 that is your legacy. Friends include everyone else, life is too short to have enemies or hold grudges.
It is with these priorities in mind that I strive to pay the price to be great. #-is simply the hashtag to get on board and follow on twitter! (I'm so 2012!) Simply put consult these ideas and make decisions to the best of your ability to follow them and you will be right more than you are wrong.
U- unity... "nothing of significance is achieved alone" you have to involve others and they have to be on the same page...
P- passion... "without passion nothing great will be accomplished" you have to want to make it be the best it can be... if for merely the fact that you were part of it...
A- appreciation... if you are not thankful for what you get you will stop getting... the best way to get good energy coming your way is to get good energy going to others...
I- integrity... no exceptions, no excuses do the right thing because it is the right thing... whether it benefits you or not... this is sometimes painful to you in the short term but the benefits long term are well worth it
D- diligence... do your work early, do your work more often, do your work better than anyone else.
This is #upaid?... I believe in it.

Fast Five for Friday... 10/12/12
1) Basketball officially starts for the N-O League in 24 days. High school athletes are so unpredictable both good and bad. One of these keys is getting them to buy in and want to be there. We are trying to develop a culture here at ACS of a winning attitude, regardless if we win or not.
2) Our culture is missing that killer instinct. In the process of teaching our kids to play nice, be nice, play fair... it becomes a challenge to teach your kid how to be aggressive and work hard to get ahead when they get criticized for doing it. Fight against mediocrity.
3) Understanding parenting and how you raise your children is directly correlated to your belief system. Do you have one.
4) University of Michigan basketball is by far the team I root for the most. B1G championship is coming. AMCC, watch out for the Medaille Mavericks.
5) Aspiring athletes that want to play college level sports. I understand that your want is there, but if you have never done a work out that is not required by a coach... you are not a college level player. The want might be there, but the WILL is not.
Have a great weekend... Cornell Football will rebound with a win against Monmouth!
JJG
Bonus... #6) Do your work early... it opens up so many doors.
#7) Your attitude and actions tell me more than your words. A-squared...

It's About That Time Again...
October is here and basketball practice starts for us in about one month. The last couple of months have been super hectic. Emma is in first grade, Ben preschool, Abby preschool, and Noelle is four months. To say that my world is fast paced would be an understatement. Yet, as the leaves change from one color to many I am reminded of why I love this time of year. We are getting ready to start the season back up.
It has been an incredible couple of months since my last post. Most of my players are two or three sport athletes. Injuries, senioritus, and large egos abound and it has left our preseason planning stalled. My staff and I are left wondering who's in and who's out. What we do know is that we have great kids that our coming out for the team.
Our challenge will obviously be to get the most out of the kids we have, and while the season looks ominous to some, our staff is ready for the challenge. Posts will be coming more frequent, but wanted to say that I have spent the last three months learning, growing and enjoying my family.
Things that I want to share on, but more importantly need feedback on... so if you have any info or insight please share.
1. Feeder programs
2. Pack line defense
3. Read and React Offense
4. Motivation
5. Practice Planning
6. Scrimmage scheduling
Wishing you all the best!
