Nike Clinic @Turning Stone
Two weeks ago I was able to attend the Nike Championship Series at the Turning Stone Resort. I always love to get away with my staff and talk basketball. This year was especially fun for me as I had an opportunity to see Coach Bob Knight speak. (Picture and autograph too!) It is funny, how in this day and age people lose sight of the simple things that make people successful. Coach Knight's words were not a depth of knowledge in tactics, but they did not have to be. The simplicity of what he said was more than enough if were there to think about what he was saying in a broader context.
-Teach them how to practice.
-Teach them how to concentrate.
It is similar to the saying, "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime." I think far too often we as parents and coaches give our kids too much material things when instead we don't give them enough of our time. Giving them our time will be worth more in the long run then any one thing we may give them. They will respond to our interaction and remember how we treat them more than any one possession we might present to them.
The clinic, full of tactical information, including some great packline defense stuff from Sean Miller, but the end of the day one of the coaches said, "You have to coach who you are," to do that though you need to know who you are and how to improve that person.
My thoughts on this are endless and at this point somewhat random. My hope is that I can give my kids the attention they need to concentrate and practice being good people.
Oh yeah... my wife and I welcome our fourth child to the world. Noelle Deanna Gerstung.
Her sister's Emma Liz and Abby Rose and brother Benjamin James are as glad to have her here, as her mom and I are.
